Embarrassing 10 Hilarious Moments Star Artists Got Caught Lip Syncin
Phonies and fakes just don’t cut it
when it comes to fans because, if there’s one thing people hate more than
anything, it’s a liar. While we have all seen our fair share of phonies over
the years, people take it personally when they are fooled by a singer who lip
synced their way through a show. It just doesn’t seem fair to pay high prices
for concert tickets and to put a whole lot of faith in someone’s talent if they
are going to fake it, does it?
But, let’s face the truth. Sometimes,
it’s necessary to lip sync especially when it comes to illnesses, outdoor
conditions or the inability to hit certain notes outside of a recording studio
(thanks Auto Tune). Either way, singers often lip sync their hits all the way
to the top without getting caught because it’s just another part of their
routine. Good music makes them rich and famous so why wouldn’t they use all the
tricks in the book?
When artists are caught lip syncing,
however, it can be completely humiliating, sometimes even ending their careers.
Other artists, however, have been able to shake off such instances with valid
excuses but still have to live through the embarrassment of having gotten
caught. Which singers, then, have had the worst lip syncing performances? Who
recovered and whose careers were forever doomed? Here’s our top 10 most
hilariously bad lip syncing moments!
#10 – Jennifer Hudson

Former American Idol contestant and
popular singer and actress, Jennifer Hudson has had much success since her
first debut on the reality show. Thanks to her incredible voice, Hudson was
tabbed with the honor of performing in front of the largest television audience
in America at the 2013 Super Bowl. As the Arizona Cardinals faced off against
the Pittsburgh Steelers in Jacksonville, Florida, Hudson and the Sandy Hook
elementary choir stunned the audience.
Hudson seemed to hit every note with
perfection, only because it was recorded beforehand. The crowd in the stadium
went nuts over the performance but, the millions watching at home knew the
truth. While some fans and critics were upset, music experts backed Hudson
saying the margin for error in the National Anthem is far too great for such a
high stress performance. Needless to say, Hudson isn’t the first and won’t be the
last to lip sync at the Super Bowl.
#9 – Shakira

Hailing from Colombia, Shakira is an
international superstar and sex symbol who has produced music megahits for over
a decade now. While known for her incredible voice, Shakira’s true talent is on
the dance floor, especially during her live performances. But, how hard is it
to sing and dance to perfection for your fans?
In front of a massive crowd gathered
for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Shakira’s track started early and was
caught on camera, hinting to the crowd that the entire performance would be lip
synced. While it might not have been obvious to those in attendance, the
television audience knew immediately when Shakira missed her cue at the
beginning of the song. The performance wasn’t a total disaster but, the pitch
differences throughout the song were pretty embarrassing.
#8 – Ashley Tisdale

One of the many actresses who made
her start on the Disney Channel, Ashley Tisdale first appeared in shows such as
The Suite Life with Zack and Cody and High School Musical. It was only a matter
of time then that, like so many other Disney actors, Tisdale tried to turn her
fame and talents into a successful music career.
It’s no surprise that performers at
the Macy’s Day Parade have to lip sync simply because the technology to perform
a moving show is nearly impossible at such a venue. Still, performers are
generally able to keep track of their lyrics but, unfortunately, Tisdale isn’t
one of them. Performing a cover to “Last Christmas”, Tisdale obviously didn’t
know the words as she looked completely lost in the 2007 parade, which led to
the video going viral and bringing lots of holiday laughter to all!
#7 – Lady Gaga

Considered one of the biggest pop
stars of the last decade, Lady Gaga exploded onto the scene with her debut
album that collected several number one hits. With fame at her fingertips, Gaga
once told the media that she would never lip sync so, when she showed up on
“Ellen” to perform, it was a bit of a shock that the superstar was clearly lip
syncing.
Missing her cues while singing
“Judas”, it was obvious that Gaga sang over a vocal track as she completely
missed the mark on more than a few occasions. Since the performance was more of
a dance piece, it was no shock that Gaga opted to mouth the lyrics. However,
with a promise to never lip sync, it seems like Gaga just might’ve had to eat
her own words.
#6 – Mariah Carey

Few female singers have accomplished
the type of success that Mariah Carey has, especially since she has produced
huge hits for more than 20 years. Of course, with over two decades in the
business, there are quite a few lip sync performances that you could pick
especially between her rough patch after Glitter to her Good Morning America
appearance that was wiped clean for the three hour delay on the West Coast.
Carey’s most notable lip syncing
fiasco was from February 2015 when she performed in Jamaica at the Jazz and
Blues Festival. Carey missed several cues while performing and ended up looking
like a complete disaster as she flubbed her way through the lines. To top it
off, she even added in weird hand motions to make it seem as though she was
giving the performance her all. Unfortunately for Carey, the hand motions
weren’t enough to hide the truth as the audience quickly caught on.
#5 – Britney Spears

With an early career as a Disney star
to her adult life in the music business, many people are interested in the life
(and drama) of Britney Spears. While there are probably a few dozen occurrences
of Britney lip syncing, we can only pick one. The most notable just might be
from 2009 when she made her return to the touring scene by performing “Circus”
in front of a large crowd in Australia.
Spears was clearly going through a
tough time and looked uninterested in attempting to sing any of her songs as
she lugged herself around on stage and half-heartedly mouthed the lyrics.
Reviews from the Australian media for her new tour didn’t go easy on her and said
that Britney’s shows were “heavy on miming and light on audience interaction.”
With harsh reviews, Britney was obviously extremely upset and embarrassed over
the entire ordeal.
#4 – Lindsay Lohan

Much like Britney Spears, people are
interested in Lindsay Lohan’s life thanks to her childhood acting career, her
music and even her adult meltdown. While it’s been nearly a decade since Lohan
was in the prime of her life, her 2004 incident is our top choice for the
star’s most embarrassing lip syncing moment even amidst a decade of her other
life drama.
Lohan appeared on Good Morning
America in 2004 to sing a couple of tracks off of her debut album, “Speak”.
While Lohan might have hit it big as a singer, she stumbled through the songs,
getting off on different syllables. By the middle of the song, Lohan’s mouth
had stopped moving while the track kept playing. Needless to say, Lohan’s reps
denied any lip syncing accusations and said that the tracks were specifically
chosen for live performances. With everything that Lohan has done since then,
it’s hard to believe there’s any truth to that.
#3 – 50 Cent

Rising through the ranks to become
one of the most popular rappers in the early 21st century, 50 Cent is one of
the biggest names in Hip Hop with multiple albums reaching number one in the
charts. But, despite even the greatest of fame and talent, even 50 Cent wasn’t
immune to lip syncing.
In 2007, 50 Cent performed at the BET
Awards as he sang “Amusement Park” in front of a live crowd and television
audience. While the singing track on the song seemed to suddenly stop, 50 Cent
tried to continue singing into the microphone, showing that it was truly a lip
sync. In an attempt to hide his embarrassment, 50 Cent walked through the crowd
fist-bumping his fans while everyone looked on confused. Afterward, he said,
“When I prepared the performance, we went through the run-through and it just
went totally different from what I actually got a chance to do.” That sounds
about right, don’t you agree?
#2 – Milli Vanilli

Undoubtedly the shortest lived act on
our entire list, Milli Vanilli’s fame only lasted a couple of years. Despite
being one of the hottest bands in the world at the time, Milli Vanilli is the
only group (or singer) who had their entire music career ended thanks to lip
syncing.
While performing live on MTV in the
summer of 1989 in Connecticut, the duo was singing “Girl You Know It’s True” as
the chorus kicked in. The title of the song repeated multiple times and Milli
Vanilli pretended to sing until they ran off of the stage in embarrassment. At
the time, fans didn’t seem to notice but the truth finally came out that the
duo never actually sang their songs and were, instead, the faces to the voices.
Deemed a complete fake, Milli Vanilli had to give up their Grammy Award for
Best New Artist after the incident.
#1 – Ashlee Simpson

Known more today as Jessica Simpson’s
younger sister and the wife of one of the band members from Fall Out Boy,
Ashlee Simpson actually attempted to launch a music career of her own in the
new millennium. While the Milli Vanilli lip syncing scandal may have been a
bigger story in terms of its ramifications, Simpson was a victim of the
internet as millions of people pressed replay on the most embarrassing moment
in her career.
During her 2004 performance on
Saturday Night Live, Simpson pulled off the most awkward moment for a singer on
the live show as the wrong song started to play. While her band continued to
play as normal, Simpson busted out into a weird old-timey jig on stage before
apologizing and walking away in the most cringe-inducing segment of the new
millennium.
